Exploring our data

Hello, in previous posts we had the opportunity to provide you with a general overview of our database. As we have told, we have information on the evolution of laws around women’s rights from 1971 to 2021. In this new post, we would like to illustrate some main features of our data. Our data has a total of 10 indicators, each measured through several items. Further, each of the 190 economies is classified into the income group and region to which it belongs.

WBL (Women, business and the law) Index

This index is reported by the World Bank Group, in the following graphs we studied the evolution of this index through the last 50 years across income group and region

Historical Progress of WBL index per income group
Historical Progress of WBL index per region

The WBL index is composed of the following dimensions: Assets, entrepreneurship, marriage, mobility, mobility, parenthood, pay, pension and workplace. In general, the behaviour of the 9 indexes by region and income group is similar to that observed in the WBL index. While overall there has been significant progress in women’s rights over the last 50 years, the higher the income of the economy, the higher the WBL index and other indices.

However, by region, we see that the Middle East & North Africa and South Asia countries have the greatest barriers to women’s rights, while the High income: OECD countries are the ones that have achieved the most equality in the laws between men and women. Progress for the countries of Europe & Central Asia and Latin America & Caribbean is very similar.

Comparison between indexes

Historical Progress by index

If we analyze by index, we can see that there are some dimensions in which there is still a very significant lag for women. Currently, there are still laws that do not favour women, especially in the dimensions of Parenthood and pay.

Items analysis for 2021

The table below shows the percentage of countries where the answer to each question is yes. If the answer is yes, it means that the laws do not impose barriers on women just because they are women. This analysis was carried out for all economies and for each of the regions.

Correlation structures

We studied the correlation between the dimensions in 2021.
